More information about Alicante

If you want to combine sun, sea, Mediterranean climate and folklore with your Spanish studies, Alicante is an excellent choice. Whether you want to relax in style and have a drink on the palm-lined esplanades or partake in the vibrant nightlife and university atmosphere, Alicante has something for all tastes: Consider studying Spanish in Alicante if you've always imagined Spain as a warm, Mediterranean paradise… and because Alicante lies between the mountains and the sea along the famed Costa Blanca, it basks in mild temperatures year round, which grants it some of the most beautiful beaches of Europe!

Alicante is a tranquil yet lively city that captivates the imagination with its rich history. The same seaside air you'll enjoy is what attracted first the Romans, enticed the Arabs to stay for more than 500 years led it to be reclaimed by the Christians in the 13th century. Celebrate Alicante's past with Las Hogueras, a lively festival during which incredible papier maché sculptures are erected and then burned amidst parades and luminous fireworks!

A city with a true Spanish flavor often known locally as simply 'Alicant', it is the area's second-biggest city in the Valencia region.

The main districts and neighborhoods in Alicante include the Old Quarter (El Barrio), which is full of historic buildings and centered around Mount Benacantil; La Zona, an area close to the Explanada de Espana known for its restaurants and nightlife; and the El Puerto district of Alicante, where you will find a huge range of shopping centers, bars, entertainment venues and clubs.

If you are a beach lover then don´t miss visiting San Juan Beach, a huge stretch of sand that has become the city´s top beach spot. Relax in the sunshine, or take a wander along one of the seafront´s many promenades and wide esplanades, such as Alicante's impressive Rambla Méndex Núnez, where al fresco dining abounds. However, if you fancy hitting a few cultural spots, why not head to the Catedral de San Nicolás de Bari - a historic and eye-catching cathedral with a Renaissance-style façade, large dome and particularly ornate cloister; Castillo de Santa Bárbara, a famous 9th-century castle which overlooks much of Alicante and has become one of the area's most prominent landmarks; Church of Santa Maria, which is Alicante's oldest church, dating back to the 14th century; and the Ayuntamiento, a Baroque-style building with twin towers and a highly decorated interior which hosts many seasonal events as Alicante’s City Hall.

With a renovated historic Old Quarter, many long and sandy beaches and a favorable year-round climate, it is easy to see why Alicante has become such as desirable tourist destination. Get to know an intimate, medium-sized city with an unbeatable climate, delicious food and warm, friendly inhabitants ready to welcome you as their own.
