Monteverde is a small town founded by a community arriving in North America in the 1950s. It is located at the entrance of the Reserva Biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde (the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve), which has made this place a popular ecotourism destination. Furthermore, the classic style of many of its buildings have been kept and not touched by modernity.
Montverde is renowned for its commitment to the sustainable development of the community and the conservation of the cloud forest reserves. A new and spectacular way to view the forest without much physical effort is the "Skywalk". These bridges, some suspended at over 130 feet, make for truly spectacular views.
Monteverde is 5 hours by bus from San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
Monteverde is not a typical Costa Rican town. It is actually a series of houses occupying different spaces, where tourists visiting the area often stay. The Monteverde inhabitants live rurally with the different services are scattered all over: one bank, one ATM, one hospital, one book shop, one post office and numerous supermarkets.
As it is located on the continental divide in the Tilarán mountain range at an elevation of 1,685m, Monteverde has a fresh and cloudy climate obliging visitors to the region to bring a warm coat to protect them from the cold temperatures. The Monteverde region is comprised of ten towns with 8000 people.
If you are keen on nature, you will love the Cloud Forest Reserve. You will be able to see an enormous range of indigenous birds and the butterfly garden will leave you breathless.
Monteverde is a quiet area with a community devoted to agriculture and farming; it is one of the areas producing the best Costa Rica cheeses, a must-do for visitors indeed!
