The city of Sucre

Sucre is the capital of Bolivia and of the Bolivian department Chuquisaca. It was founded by Pedro de Anzures in 1538, under the order of Francisco Pizarro. It was very important because of the natural wealth of resources nearby: the Potosí and Porco mines. It is also home to the third Latin American university, "la Universidad Mayor Real y Pontificia de San Francisco de Xavier de Chuquisaca".

Sucre was named the "White City" due to the color of its colonial style buildings. It is one of the South American cities that has best conserved its historic past, with its fountains, cobbled streets, churches and small squares with gardens. At the end of the 18th century Sucre was modernized by the wealth of its mining industry, which led to its current appearance.

It is located in an area of indigenous peasant communities, who brighten up the streets with their traditional multi-coloured clothing, making the city of Sucre even more picturesque.

From the second week of September, Sucre and Potosí celebrate the Festival of Art and Culture, which more than 2000 national and international artists attend, and for two weeks the city is full of multicultural artistic expressions with music, paintings, literature and much more. A variety of ethnic groups that belong to the Bolivian society also participate.

Sucre is situated in the high parts of the Andes. Near the city you find mild valleys crossed with rivers, ideal for fishing or swimming. You can stroll through these beautiful natural surroundings, or relax in one of the many thermal spas.

Monteagudo and Tarabuco are popular tourist destinations with the Milagro mountain ranges and the rapids that flow down from the mountains. It is the settlement place of the native Tupi people. Also, Cal Orko is the site of the footprints of some of the biggest dinosaurs in the world. More than 5000 different footprints give us an idea of the impressive diversity within the animal kingdom during the dinosaur era.

We are sure that Sucre will fascinate you, as much as with its beautiful urban colonialism, as with its natural surroundings.
